Thats one of the reasons my fleet is truly democratic, everyone has a voice in our operations.

kumi 09-Nov-19 02:01 PM
(now we don't have to rush as much so more question time yay)

Yeah, if I could do that, I wouldn't have the problems I'm having.
Yep, that's why at the beginning we tried to teach some of these things. it goes in order (edited)

What have you all found might make users uncomfortable in an environment?
1. Bossiness. My goodness, I can not stand when a leader is bossy and forces you to do things. 2. Inequality between members (like an oligarchy) If they feel one person is above others in the roleplay that pushes them away
Those are the top 2 things
Avatar
[SB118] Lael Roesk 09-Nov-19 02:03 PM
But with more expansive fleets, doesn't the whole democracy bit create problems? Does anyone use an overseeing entity (council) to guide the bigger decisions?

A council works well when you also weigh in the opinions of the community. (edited)
it honestly depends on what works best with your site
Avatar
Chistery 09-Nov-19 02:04 PM
So, when I asked before about branching out, I asked because I'm not clear on what to do to get more people. I advertise on Facebook and on the Recruiting Discords because I'm looking for an 18+ player base who are willing to play characters in their mid to late 20s to mid to late 30s. I'm not getting much of a response to my ads, but I suspect it's because I'm doing a reboot, a concept I inherited from another sim, when that sim flopped.
Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 02:04 PM
Probably. Reboots don't tend to get as much attention as original ideas.
What exactly is your sim about?
Avatar
[Zodiac Fleet] NX-1701-G 09-Nov-19 02:04 PM
It depends on the situation in my view regarding a council vs. Democracy as there are times where people may not feel they had adequate time to participate. Plus, sometimes people do pursue their own agendas
Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 02:05 PM
Indeed.

@[SB118] Lael Roesk We use a GM council in 22nd. All officers serve at the pleasure of the council, and every major decision is voted on

@Chistery while we do get older players, I've found that a lot of our new players lately are younger, so it might just be the trend at the moment.

I inherited a Stargate Reboot. SGC is leveled and the gate is buried for 20 years. So, basically, Stargate Canon stops after S2 E1 and picks up again in 2019

I don't mind younger players, but characters under 25 are inappropriate for the SG-Teams for example.
Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 02:08 PM
Yeah, definitely some age ranges just aren't appropriate for certain things which is understandable
Avatar
Chistery 09-Nov-19 02:10 PM
And of course, the only response I got so far from the recent ads was someone who wanted to play an 18 year old Alien Liaison, even though the ad clearly states I'm looking primarily for military characters. The sim is in part stalled because I'm playing all of the antagonists, all of the off-world NPCs, and all of the military characters, and it's just too much.
Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 02:11 PM
Yeah, playing with yourself is not fun. So you've been using Facebook groups, right?
Avatar
Chistery 09-Nov-19 02:12 PM
Facebook, RPG Recruiting Discord, Major Tom's Discord, Fall Fest, Sci-World and Project Khitomer (though I need to update ads on the last two).

Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 02:13 PM
yeah maybe try some recruitment groups on google groups, maybe twitter would be good to advertise on too, and advertise on some forums
I had a good one at one point, but lost it. I would say the OngoingWorlds one, but it's dated.

Actively going out of your way to ignore canon and establish things in a universe is, in my eyes, a bit disrespectful. For example, if you were to be trying to run a game with a player who wanted to be playing as GASP the third child of Anakin and PAdme
Avatar
[Zodiac Fleet] NX-1701-G 09-Nov-19 02:59 PM
You've seen that game too?
Just kidding
Avatar
Mecha meme 09-Nov-19 02:59 PM
There are a lot of people who do stuff like that
Even worse, ones who change their character after you've approved it
Avatar
kumi 09-Nov-19 03:00 PM
What are you referring to?
Avatar
Mecha meme 09-Nov-19 03:00 PM
Like, people who actively go against established canon

Avatar
aio 09-Nov-19 03:00 PM
Like writing a character for Trek whose Great Grandfather was Spock or something like that?
Avatar
Mecha meme 09-Nov-19 03:01 PM
Like say you as a GM approve a character who was just a normal soldier
But then out of the blue the player changes it to be "BUT ACTUALLY HE'S THE SON OF [insert major canonical character here]" or "BUT ACTUALLY HIS MEMORIES ARE FALSE AND HE'S A BIOWEAPON" without your approval
Avatar
aio 09-Nov-19 03:02 PM

Mecha meme 09-Nov-19 03:03 PM
The worst part is when no one else thinks that there's anything wrong with that
Avatar
Chistery 09-Nov-19 03:03 PM
I've retconned in the past, but only with permission of the GM. From the GM side (and personally, for my own characters as a player) where ever possible I reject and/or alter canon if the canon was clearly a speed of plot thing and makes no real sense.
Avatar
aio 09-Nov-19 03:03 PM
I don't mind a retcon, but I would say no if the retcon was something major like that.
Avatar
Chistery 09-Nov-19 03:04 PM
Yep. Me too

[SB118] Lael Roesk 09-Nov-19 03:04 PM
We try to avoid it and just lead it in a better direction when we can
Avatar
[PF] AlexM 09-Nov-19 03:04 PM
I like to play fast and loose when it comes to canon. I have one major rule. "Never let canon get in the way of a good story."
Avatar
[SB118] Lael Roesk 09-Nov-19 03:04 PM
Sort of a "next"
Avatar
aio 09-Nov-19 03:04 PM

To circle back, canon can be a good thing
Avatar
[GEC] Kai1701E 09-Nov-19 03:09 PM
Hell yeah
It's what you do with it that makes it useful
Avatar
[SB118] Lael Roesk 09-Nov-19 03:10 PM
Definitely. It gives you something to work within
If you don't know the limits of the world you're writing in how are you supposed to know if something is reasonable or not? I understand that there needs to be a certain amount of suspension of disbelief for the purposes of writing and reading stories. However in order to best connect with others and create a fun story it needs to be somewhat realistically attuned to real life experiences. That's how you're going to catch people the best
Avatar
aio 09-Nov-19 03:12 PM
Yup
And if you are just expanding what already exists, you can throw stuff from real life into it, and just grow something from seed to oak tree.
That's from LotR or something haha (edited)

Another good piece of advice is to know the difference between IC and OOC situations. For example if your character does something wrong, there'll be consequences. They will get in trouble, but with OOC communication, you the writer, aren't in trouble. Hopefully that all makes sense because it's something I learned early on.
Avatar

when I first joined the game (UFOP: Starbase 118; I was stationed on Ops at the time), I didn't know about the Hobus Supernova because the universe primer hadn't been written yet. When I was told Romulus went boom, I did a minor retcon and worked that into the character's backstory.
