Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!
And welcome to Star Trek trivia! Now, I know that the Nova event in room #1 is going to be very popular, so we'll see how many people we get here. But let's get going...
I don't think we can do any trivia game without first acknowledging the passing of long-time Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. Let's take a moment of silence before we start.
Thank you.
Who all is here? If you don't mind, could everyone say their name and whayt club they're from?
Avatar
[USF] - [●●] RAdm De'luvia 14-Nov-20 12:04 PM
OH! we're all ST peoples. There is a petition and its already over 15k signed, wanting Levar Burton to be the new host. And yes. I already miss Alex. That man fought tooth and nail and did that till the bitter end.

Since this is the last FallFest sponsored by Ongoing Worlds, I decided to go back to the beginning... the very beginning. This is going to be Star Trek TOS Season 1 trivia. I have one question from each of the 28 episodes, and then one final tie breaker question if we need it.

As the title indicates for the next 60+ minutes we're going to be talking about a problem many GM's likely face
Less people to attract to your games and more sims to compete with
In times like these, having something unique to offer is vital not just to being big but, being in the first place

[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:02 PM
For this session I'm kind of hoping to apply something one of my university professors always told me. The quickest way for people to forget what they hear is a monologue
So I'm hoping to start very shortly with a brief introduction
and from that point forward shift to a more workshop and q&a type deal
So please do get all your questions ready. 🙂
As for the introduction, I'm Alexander. I've been simming on and off but mostly on for the past 15 years (from age 12 roughly). At first in the Dutch Star Trek community and as of 2009 in the international one
Throughout this time I've easily led 15 sims and saw the trends that were unfolding
Where things were easy in 2005, and quite frankly a lot of low quality writing was the norm
Things have massively matured since then
To a level where almost every sim has novel quality writing
The best way to distinguish yourself in this is to develop a unique selling point, and this can literally be anything
Are you great at world building?
Develop a universe around the sim
Are you a massive people's person?
Foster the community through games and other fun stuff
The key is to focus on your strengths
and use those to make an impact
To give a small illustration of something I saw, @[22] greenfelt has developed a pretty amazing sim in the USS Black Hawk
The activity has consistently been on top for years with basically no dips
and the community is closeknit
Combine that with interesting stories and you get a formula for longterm growth and high membership numbers
At the same time there is a classic in Starbase 400 by MBremer
This sim has leveraged both age and the profile of the GM to stay big and active
And throughout every fleet you can find more examples like these.
Everyone is capable of doing something like this
But the most important thing is finding your niche
Now that is kind of the basis I wanted to set with this introduction, the importance of a niche, unique selling point or whatever you want to call it
Now I'd like to ask for examples from the floor of sims they are on or lead
And if we can find that niche together 🙂
Avatar
[USF] - [●●] RAdm De'luvia 14-Nov-20 01:10 PM
Angelus, 25 years, CO, XO, Staff, number of orgs. Still currently staff for one. Things on any have been up and down as always happens. The largest issue I have always run into in any aspect is toxic players. They want to try to get along, they put on a front, and then work with other people in the background to screw over other players they simply don't like. Be it how they play their characters or maybe something personal OOC.

Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:12 PM
There are honestly a few ways in my experience you can handle them
👍 2
and a lot goes back to your own skills as a GM
👍 1
Are you a strong people's person? Then there is value in trying to appeal to their inner part and try to find out what is causing their behaviour
Because no one is toxic without a reason
👍 2
Another strength, as a GM however is knowing when to call it quits
Your key interest is the prosperity, safety and welfare of your entire crew/staff
👍 1
If one person keeps ruining it, even if they are your most active poster or something
You need to pull the plug so to say
Avatar
[USF] - [●●] RAdm De'luvia 14-Nov-20 01:14 PM
I agree, you can deal with people if they are like that. If they are toxic for OOC reasons, or maybe IC reasons, still, you should know, or learn how to deal with it and be productive. Not F all of fellow players over just cause you're pissed off at the world.

My experience is that people have their good days and their bad days. Everyone will disagree, but as per ucip use to do. There's always the knowledge of learning how to use idic and knowing not everyone plays the same way you do. Using that, you can work through any toxic situation.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:17 PM
Ie, there is a lot of posting compared to the average
In a way your very sim is already kind of a distinguishing niche (edited)
Starbases and station sims are pretty rare
👍 3
So they easily become something to get drawn into
On the other hand, they are also more difficult to write on as you don't have the flexibility of warping to another place if you need a change of scenery
So what I'd say is that putting some kind of focus on developing the local system more could actually really help you
Involvement in planetary politics perhaps?
Basically like we saw the ongoing Bajor arc in DS9
Avatar
[PF] Tobias Bishop - CO DS3 14-Nov-20 01:20 PM
I'd had thought some on that. Right now I'm still struggling with growth and retention.. thus my being here today.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:21 PM
Yeah, I feel growth might be solved if your recruitment ads emphasize the things that really distinguish you from the average Star Trek sim. Isolation, being on a base, addition of what I mentioned above. Retention, that unfortunately is hard to say from afar. But what you need is something to bind people to your sim beyond just a writing place
👍 2
The best sims feel like homes to their members
If you get that, you're set for life

Kylindra 14-Nov-20 01:21 PM
I know 118 (for example) ended up closing it's sole installation sim. (although 118 is an unusual duck in terms of how it runs, so it may not be a good cross example)
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:22 PM
@Kylindra honestly 118 is a pretty great example
Especially because we also have a long timespan to review it in
Many of the developments in the wider simming community can be seen in the specific development of older organizations like 118, Bravo Fleet, Obsidian Fleet, etc.
Installations are unique, but they need a lot going for them to remain stable
Which is why a lot fall
I remember back when I was TFCO in BF, I had 6-7 people start an installation
and all but one failed
but if you develop the unique strengths, you can defy the trends
and due to the uniqueness elevate it

[USF] VAdm Killian Sylver 14-Nov-20 01:26 PM
I was on a planetary outpost/colony sim. It was wonderful and had a good following because the hosting team allowed people to not only do Starfleet characters but also civilians and the plots were not all Starfleet either, but were balanced with the planet and colony, not just the outpost. Then the hosting team changed and made it all about Starfleet and ruined it. You can make installation sims work, if you don't narrow your focus, but rather expand it.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:26 PM
And you do have quite a bit going on already imo
Your posting rate the last period I looked at has been beyond solid
Focus on that and you can show a place that is alive
Avatar
[PF] Tobias Bishop - CO DS3 14-Nov-20 01:27 PM
I really like the "develop planets" idea.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:27 PM
Yeah, it's one of the best things you can do as an installation
Because it makes a common weakness (being in one place), a strength (having a highly developed and alive place)
Most sims will visit a planet once or twice
but with a starbase you can make it real
@[USF] VAdm Killian Sylver Exactly!
And actually a perfect example of a sim distinguishing itself
A lot of people will go Starfleet only
But having civilians and aliens involved is something you don't see often
and don't easily have a replacement for
The same is for example a Marine only sim, someone who wants to write on that usually has 1 or 2 options
You always have to ask. "If I were a player, what would make me join A rather than B-Z?"
And do be honest to yourself
Or if you can't do that yourself, ask a friend to do so
Avatar
[USF] VAdm Killian Sylver 14-Nov-20 01:31 PM
One of the things I loved most about the outpost/colony was the fact that my engineer could do logs about working on the outpost and then going home and throwing a barbeque for friends. Hard to do on a ship.

I have my own example I recently relaunched, which is a sim based on a hypothetical where the Dominion won the Dominion War
and a fleet of refugee ships settled in the Delta Quadrant to return after 300 years to retake it
That's something that few places have
and if you can develop something like that
It's a strength
and yeah @[IP] Coffee Addict in that example I'd say your key strength as a CO is world building
and story telling

Avatar
FrostedSiren 14-Nov-20 01:38 PM
Unfortunately.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:38 PM
Well it's not just that they're too niche, it's just a lot of GM's and players struggle with truly getting the Mirror Universe
So either you have a sim that glorifies pure violence and are basically gorefests
Or you have slightly dark side regular Trek
Basically any kind of universe that has a lot of excess, is hard to balance
But in general things can be too niche for sure
With all things, there needs to be balance
Finding that balance takes time
but it's worth it in the end
Okay, does anyone have any specific questions or examples they want us to look at?
I guess not, perhaps we can do a little exercise then and try to find the niche for a fantasy example sim
Let's say, an independent Star Trek sim. A Sovereign Class set in the post Nemesis era just around the time of Hobus. The GM has a psychology degree in real-life and a very creative XO
How could this sim develop something unique?

Hah, kind of reminding me of my TA days when I asked a question of the class 😛
Moving on then
Fantasy sims
These are a particularly different challenge from the ones we discussed before
Because by design they have enormous potential, most fantasy universes have a lot of background and very little stories that are set in stone
To take as an example, A Song of Ice and Fire, or Dragon Age
We have entire worlds in these fantasy universes
but we have a couple of books and a show or a few games as far as official lore goes

[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:47 PM
At the same time, there is very little infrastructure. A Star Trek sim can join any of dozens of simming organizations dedicated to just that
if they don't want to join a group, there are recruitment sites and Facebook groups

Avatar
[USF] VAdm Killian Sylver 14-Nov-20 01:47 PM
Not really. I write fantasy novels in my spare time for fun, not published. I also have GM'ed Star Trek for 25 years. It's still just a matter of building a setting that the players can be creative in, and then come up with plot arcs that allow for all characters to have say in what happens and grow and progress.
Avatar
[PE] Alexander 14-Nov-20 01:48 PM
So I'd say the largest challenge there is not having something to offer your players
But finding the players to offer it to

and a lot of subreddits have fairly open advertisement policies if it's relevant to their main topic
So exposing your sim to them can jumpstart your playerbase
and from there it's word of mouth

I personally joined it 11 years ago and have been running it for just over two years. Overall I've been roleplaying for twenty years and writing stories for far longer than that. Roleplaying and simming are just otherways of telling stories, and all great stories have one thing in common, a great villian. In the next hour I'm going to cover a few points of designing and running villians in your games. I'm also going to limit discussions to characters designed as villains from the get go, not good guys or neutral guys who become bad guys over a period of being in play. (evolving to the villain is a topic for a nother day) Make a good villain (Theme and detail) Play a good villian Defeat a good villain Does that sound good?

if you hold your mouse over, you;ll see some of the groups I think they make when you look at the similarities
hilst its fair to claim the best villains are unique, its also fair to say the Villains can break down into a number of types, largely determined by their broad motivations. When I look at some of my favourites they break down as follows (If my gif isn't running automatically, hold the mouse over my villains to see how I divide up some of my favourites: • Right things for wrong reasons (Magneto, Killmonger ) • Delusions of the Greater Good (Gilead, General Chang, any number of Federation Admiral, The Neighbourhood watch • Forces of Nature (The Shark, The Terminator, The Xenomorph) • Existential Threats (The Borg, Reapers, The White Witch • Vengeance hunters (Maleficient, Khan, Sarah Kerrigan) • Megalomaniacs (Lady Macbeth, The Emperor, Voldemort) • Agents of Entropy & Chaos (The Joker, Loki, Rebecca de Winter) • Petty Bullies (Dolores Umbridge, Nurse Ratched, Obadiah Hawkswill) • Corrupters (Satan, Darth Vader, Dracula, Hannibal Lecter) • The Vain & Greedy (Cruella de Ville, CatWoman, Smaug
And there are others that I haven't decided on, e.g. Norman Bates, Hans Lander, Annie Wilkes

I'm not saying my categories are universal, but when I break down the villains I like, this grouping makes sense to me. I recommend that everyone goes away and groups up the villains they like and see what themes emerge, as you are more likely to produce successful villains if they're in a similar group to other villains you love.
So, if you have a ship full of pirates, and obvious villian type for them would be one with Delusions of a Greater Good, thinks he's doing good works, but is really a hypocrite, or a petty tyrant, or just obsessed with enforcing the law.
And from that you can see how the juices begin to flow...
Not all types may be appropriate to all games. it may be harder to shoe horn a greed based villian into say, a post-scarcity universe, but it can be done. Look at Ferengi

there's a whole nother panel in how daddy issues get everywhere in fiction, and how they're very lazy writing
anyway In peripatetic games, such as ship-based games (E.g. star Trek, Firefly, Elite, Rogue Trader) it can be harder to make that personal connection, so early moments in an adventure may be needed to make that connection - such as when D'Artagnan meets Rochefort.

A chance early ecnounter, where the players either have to run away (most players I know are sore losers. this will hurth them, and they will hate that guy)
or in some otherway experience the villains power is useful
even if you don't meet the villain.
WE never meet the villain in the Usual Suspects. All we know is that absolutely everyone wets themselves at the mention of Kaiser Sose.
❤️ 1
@Storming Norman spoilers, darling, spoilers
but the point is made if freinds, bosses, confidents, are all reacting to a villain, you make that personal connection. and help build the back story. How have all their freinds come into contact? what network do they have that can be turned on the PCs etc
And when they finally do meet the villain, we move to the next step of villian creation, personality and skills
One quick and dirty way I have of making villains is to take a personality trait, may be something wholesome, like they're charming.
then turn it up to eleven
charming becomes manipulative
a disciplined person becomes rigid, spontaneous becomes reckless and impulsive becomes erratic and dangerously unpredictable,

2) Be evil, and don't bottle it. There's a scene in the Denzel Washington film where Denzels character promises to kill everyone involved in the kidnapping of the little girl he is supposed be protecting. Other characters build him up as a terryfying bogey man. The bad guys are crapping themselves as Denzel efficiently offs even those tangetially involved. And then Denzel commits the ultimate mistake. He lets a woman who is absolutely and definitely involved live. That screwed the film for me. And if your hero not following through, then your villain no following through is going to take all the impact out of it.

What you can actually show will depend on your game and your players, but don't let that stop you from have your villain doing bad things. Be Brutal, go for their weaknesses. Don't fight the warrior types. Go for the doctors and the children. If your players are on a diplomatic mission, set something up to discredit their authority. Make them choose between awful things, like the sadistic choice Joker set up in The Dark Knight. Take away their money, make sure credit for their achievements goes to someone else. Don't hurt their children. Get their children to love you more and turn against their parents

As the Riddler said in Batman Forever, "if you kill him, he won't learn nothin!". so no killing. At least not at first. A dead enemy doen'st know they've been beaten. Mutilate them. Scar them. Chop bits off. Every time they look in the mirror, or dent their prosthetic, they'll remember you. Cut a woman's hair off. Or burn it off for extra sadist points.

(Well, they're more like guidelines really 😉 )
1) Have that defeat be deliberate, not off screen.
Avatar
Lia 14-Nov-20 02:50 PM
Good information is always useful.
Avatar
Beautiful Night 14-Nov-20 02:50 PM
Chance things happening elsewhere are a) boring and b) unsatisfying
2) Have the villian stay up until as many of them as you can manage are on their last legs. If it’s a physical fight then he lasts until they're bleeding out, potential organ failure, ammo in single figures, down to their last spell points, shields at five percent etc. Look at the pounding that Tony Stark And Steve Rogers took in end game.
If it’s a intellectual or emotional fight, the same principal applies, land your hardest blow, present the most damning evidence, pull the dirtiest trick, just before you're ready to see him taken down. The more hopeless the situation, the more satisfaction in turning the tables and the final victory.
no dawn for players until they've had their darkest moment
fudge the dice, write around anything clever if you can (but without stepping on the cleverness. This is hard, and requires empathy and practise)
3) Don't have the villain fought by a NPC whilst PCs watch.
It sounds obvious but I've been in games where powerful PC were forced to sit around and watch. No one gets the killing blow and everyone goes home sad and mad. And even worse, bored.

we're close to time, so.
I have one last thought. If you had fun with your villain, and really want to play them again, remember the wisdom of Marvel: If your villain dies, and you don't find the body, he isn't dead If you find a body, it’s a decoy If you find the body, and its not a decoy, then the mind has escaped If you find the body, and its not a decoy, and the mind is definitely in there, then the villains, child/sibling takes over. If you find the body, no decoy, mind definitely dead, and no one takes over the name, the villain wasn't good enough anyway 😛

Alrighty, hello. I'm Cipher, as stated, I'm on the Resources team with Pegasus Fleet. And what I'd like to get into is going to be summarized in a quote by Gene Roddenberry himself - "Please remember that a major hero of Star Trek has always been the Starship Enterprise and her mission. The ship is not just a vehicle - she is the touchstone by which all of our characters demonstrate who they are and what they're up to in the universe."
UFP 5
nx01 1
And this is a multisided issue, firstly what ships are being offered and how to make your ship a character of your sim. While I'll be sticking mainly to Trek, you can think of this too with other RPG settings where you want a ship that isn't just a way to getting from point A to point B.
So, let's look at first the ship classes themselves. Of course, canon gives us plenty of options to start, but of course, as with all settings, fans will want more options, something to meet what they're wanting, and that's okay. But consider a question - if we don't appreciate a Mary Sue character, should we not apply the same thinking to a ship design and intent?

There's this meme floating around, of a fanon Star Destroyer that is so massive that it carries Super Star Destroyers like fighters. And someone added a fake letter from it's CO about how such a size got so out of hand that making a left turn wiped out an entire fleet in their wake, the various departments were forming tribes and going to war and the bridge viewscreen was so massive it induced vertigo.
It's amusing, but it illustrates the point.

I went LOA 4 times because it became emotionally draining to always be in that plot, and that's really the only plot you can sell with such a design.

Exactly, there are virtues in having some old ship on the end of its lifespan, maybe you get stuck with the Second Line missions like in Lower Decks. It's falling apart like the Enterprise-A was in ST:V, but on the other hand, it's tried and true, it's got all manner of history to it and it has quirks.

So, @Cipherhornet18...I’ve got a ship with a specific trait that kind of sets it apart, but aside from that, it comes across as your run-of-the-mill hero explorer. How do I go about building a unique character for it that doesn’t hinge solely on that one trait? Like...where’s the best place to start? (edited)

I think most of the shows had characters that treated the ship with reverence and respect. Like Scotty fighting a Klingon over an insult to his Enterprise. Or the tears they all felt when they later watched that ship break apart on reentry after activating the self destruct. You don't react that way if it's "just a ship."

That's why I've always said that a new sim needs to think about their identity first. What do they want to be? What do they want to do? How do they want to handle those situations? Once they have all of those things in mind, then they can start thinking about the ship's class.

One story element, for example, that I've gone with is the Hornet was supposed to be scrapped after her keel was laid down - Starfleet wanted its materials for more Inquiry classes. It was grudgingly finished and it has a junior crew because no one else could be bothered. That as we go may manifest itself further. Systems might not be running as tight as they should be, the crew is junior and has big boots to fill. They aren't supposed to be out there but they're doing it.

As with anything, don't be afraid to get outside eyes on it. Sometimes it helps to have someone take a look, but yeah, be careful because those flaws you fell in love with might be something that a third party is going to have questions about...
But to loop it all back around in the last 10 mins.
A Mary Sue isn't a good character, so don't let it be a ship too. For many sims, your ship is your selling point. And yes, there is going to be a risk in niche appeals, I've seen a few niche sims pop up in PF. But it makes me happy to see them because you're willing to take that gamble.
You don't need to come up with all of your ship's emotional baggage in one day and drop it into one post - I frankly dislike that when it's done for a character. No sense of pacing, so take your time. Look to your ship's class, it's name, it's history but also it's future.

We’re going to get started now so we can get as much game play in as possible. How will this work? Exactly like the real Family Feud minus the Fast Money section… except we’ll be doing this in old school text style format. The team with the most points at the end wins. Are you ready?

As you might have been wondering, no, I was not able to survey 100 people for all of the topics we’re going to cover today. Instead, I asked the question to all 10 of the Independence Fleet sim COs & Admirals. I may say, “100 people surveyed,” from time to time, but I really mean, “10 IDF leaders surveyed.”

Each round will start with a face-off between 2 contestants from each time. The winner from the face off will then choose to play or pass, and we’ll continue. If you’re not sure what to do, I’ll be giving specific instructions throughout. Just follow my lead. There should be ZERO coordination or talking among team members EXCEPT when discussing on a STEAL. PLEASE DO NOT CHEAT!!! However, always feel free to provide encouragement with “Good answer, good answer” or the like.
To give an example of what the board will look like:
Who is the greatest simming game show host ever? [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
If someone guessed "Charles Star," it will then show up like this:
[ Charles Star ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Each side will get three strikes:
[ X ] one strike
