Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!
Welcome to "The Future of Role Playing: How will simming end?"
Before we begin, can everyone introduce themselves and say which club you hail from?

Welcome to all! I'm Charles Star from Independence Fleet.
I'm going to go ahead and warn everyone: This panel won't be as good as Josh's in panel 1, but feel free to stay here anyway if you're a gluton for punishment. (edited)
Much like the origin of the universe, the beginnings of the simming and online role playing community remain shrouded in mystery. Sure, we know that it developed out of fan fiction on primordial
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:06 PM
o/ Heyla,
SilverNight, founder of Xanathars pub, a catchall from D&D to WH40K RPGs, Independant (mostly, also bum around on WanderingStar)

If you want to check it out real quick, go ahead.
If there's been one costant throughout role playing history, it's been change. (edited)
How long has everyone here been simming?
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:08 PM
17 years.
Archie Skystriker18-Apr-20 02:08 PM
1 year
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:08 PM
22 years here
John18-Apr-20 02:08 PM
3 years
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:08 PM
hmm...10 years give or take a 2 year gap...
Arieg18-Apr-20 02:09 PM
10 years iirc?
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:09 PM
Answers all over the map, great! I just hit 20 years myself earlier this year.
Arieg18-Apr-20 02:09 PM
I don't think I've actually posted an RP in a while tho XD
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:09 PM
~5 years or so
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:10 PM
Amazing how time flies isn't it?
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:10 PM
Yes, @SilverNight
Nathalie Chapman18-Apr-20 02:10 PM
21 years
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:10 PM
Started at 11 with watching my mum and friends play AD&D in a crowded living room.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:10 PM
Another question for everyoe, for your time simming, what's been the biggest change or what's had the biggest impact on the community, for better or worse? (edited)
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:11 PM
10 years for me
Wes of StarArmy [SA]18-Apr-20 02:11 PM
My first tabletop RPG I made was in elementary school but I didn't really get into online RP until 2000 so I'll say 20 years.
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:11 PM
I think for us, it's just been the decline in interest in text-based RPG as a whole
Wes of StarArmy [SA]18-Apr-20 02:11 PM
Biggest change was just getting old, having my first kid and losing my free time.
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
and our bulletin-board format is so niche
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
I like it @Wes of StarArmy [SA]
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
kids too, on my end lol
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
@BusyBeaver what have you done to respond to that change?
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
I think the death of AOL hit me hard, and I imagine a lot of others as well
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:12 PM
@Iggy true for a lot of people
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:13 PM
We've contracted as a club considerably. we've had to reduce the number of ships (ie. sims) we have to make sure we can still operate in a reasonable manner
Arieg18-Apr-20 02:13 PM
For me? Going independent.... starting to world build my own thing from the ground up, developing the knowledge and tools to make it detailed... good god figuring out those tools.
Wes of StarArmy [SA]18-Apr-20 02:13 PM
The death of Yahoo user chat rooms was a big thing for me, as that was my first real RP playground. But it resulted in RP groups having to adapt and make their own things and Star Army was one of those things that spawned.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:13 PM
cool @Arieg
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:14 PM
My biggest change was getting married and having kids. Not enough free time anymore.
Wes of StarArmy [SA]18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
( ALSO it was crazy looking back to have one or two sites where the entire internet was using as their home page )
Arieg18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
Everything from 3D Cads to figuring out the entire suite of Campaign Cartographer
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
@BusyBeaver that's happened in a lot of places
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
The biggest change. imho?
for the better was the advent of the Internet really - the ability to post up on forums and begin actively discussing and holding open forums on spreading fantasy/worldbuilding settings.
For worse?
I can't pin any one thing.
Loss of the old MSN groups was a hard blow for me - I lost years of worldbuilding that I never backed up.
Taught me that having a backup copy was king in the digital era.
1
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
undoubtedly
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:14 PM
several have mentioned kids. would any of you introduce your kids to online role playing?
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:15 PM
I would, if they were interested and old enough.
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:15 PM
When they’re old enough... and only if it’s a safe space.
1
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:15 PM
Oh without a doubt, the kid already plays minecraft (limitedly, at 6yo) with me.
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:15 PM
If I ever have kids, sure. I would love to play on the same game as my kid. Would be an interesting dynamic.
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:16 PM
Can't wait for minecraft dungeons to release to see if she'll take to that alongside me.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:16 PM
you guys already have a lot of great ideas here!
Next question, how did you begin simming? Who invited or pulled you into it?
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:16 PM
I spoke to my younger brother about it and for some reason he went and joined a load
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:16 PM
I found it on my own. Random google search lol
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:17 PM
I know we were talking about the biggest change. I can echo other’s sentiments about making sure you can keep copies of your creations.
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
I was like "Why didn't I find this earlier!"
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
@BusyBeaver what were you searching for?
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
I saw a Facebook ad that doesn’t exist,
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
Some random search about the Star Trek Academy novels
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
I stumbled across SLA and FSF back in the day. Looked at both organizations and found myself attracted to the games on FSF and joined around 2010-11.
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:17 PM
I started when I found a RP site on TrekWeb’s forums.
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:17 PM
and I found STF's Academy that way and was like "what is this?!" haha
I'm a writer to begin with, so I gravitate towards that
Archie Skystriker18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
Well, my partner in crime Messenger introduced me to it. I believe the first sim I did was your Simming Endeavor last year @[IDF] Charles Star
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
Trek Andromeda was my first game and the hosts and crew had a great chemistry and the stories were dynamic. I was drawn in night after night and explored other games. I just got hooked.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
i found 118 when I idly researched 'star trek roleplay' lol
John18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
MY father was in Bravofleet a long time ago, and i remembered thinking how cool it was, and wanted to join in on that fun
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
As for Star Army and 22nd.. I found them the same way
Nathalie Chapman18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
A recruitment advert on a Star Trek forum
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
.. well, SA via one of the get togethers
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:18 PM
yes @Archie Skystriker you were awesome. I still can't hardly believe that the game show with other experienced rp'ers was your first sim. that took guts! (edited)
Do many of you do recruiting today? How do you do it? And how successful are you?
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:19 PM
After I saw the Facebook advert that doesn’t exist I searched it up in google and then applied and 2 and a bit years later I’m still a member
Archie Skystriker18-Apr-20 02:20 PM
Well, if you have the right mindset, it is not that bad. I really did not see it as a competition
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:20 PM
cool @Zech ♿
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:20 PM
My first sim was based on the old commodor 64 version of Star Trek.
I can't even remember the name of the place anymore it was so long ago.
It was actually a massive Email chain.
1
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:20 PM
Commodore 64!
I haven't thought about that in a while!
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:20 PM
I primarily use various Discord groups to recruit. The best recruiting method I’ve found is to just build good relationships with people.
1
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:20 PM
Recruitment is largely word-of-mouth
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:21 PM
I’m part of the publicity team in 118. We have a variety of ways of advertising, we have social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Reddit in which we post on in different ways to target people in said platforms and in varied amounts of time.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:21 PM
@Zech ♿ does that stuff work?
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:21 PM
We also I think run google ads? Would I be right in saying that @Kylindra
Stephen Hunter UK18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
I mostly advertise internally on the sites I am on.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
Sometimes. I'm not on the advertising team
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
Not as much as regular google searches but we do get a fair few people through social media
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
I know they tried to advertise on google and such, I'd have to check if we still do
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
We do stuff on social media too, though to date I think i've maybe had 1 person join because they saw something of ours on social media.
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
I’m on the publicity team and honestly I have no idea @Kylindra
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
Not anymore. I used to recruit via word of mouth to friends I thought would be interested. FB was a great platform from what I recall.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
... that's kinda worrying lol
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
It is
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
I know we used to advertise on the pbem list
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
We have no money for ads and never will, (intentionally) so that limits what you can.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
and on various writing roleplay groups
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:22 PM
yes @BusyBeaver
money money money!
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:23 PM
I think I also used to use the startrek forums website too
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:23 PM
We also put links in the different online conventions such as this one
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:23 PM
We have people who joined in different eras, from over 20 years ago to just last year
We have people who were recruited in different ways and who recruit now in different ways.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:24 PM
I just checked
Unless there's money to ads that 118 doesn't have in the donation bin, we dont' buy adds
(which makes sense, they're expensive.)
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:24 PM
Do you you think simming itself has changed much? I don't mean like moving from YahooGroups to Nova, but more, do we write and tell stories differently than we used to?
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
I just started simming 2 years ago so I don’t know
But gosh.. 2 years
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
I don't know about that. I think people always tell the stories that are important to them in the time they need to be told.
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
The landscape is much different than what it was 6 years ago. In terms of the sims I've begun participating in again, the core concept remains the same.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
mmm.
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
the format may shift slightly as technology changes, but stories are stories
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:25 PM
So, speaking as someone who's looked at old 118 sims in the old lists
There's definitely a tonal shift
and more preference towards specific plot elements
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:26 PM
I’m sure in the 26 years of 118s existence there will have been some change though
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:26 PM
The game I'm on in DF (Bastian) uses images in unique ways to help progress the plot and story. It's an interesting technique.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:26 PM
I feel, sometimes, just from looking at fanfiction trends, that longer running sims and fleets will show more reflection of changing wants in storytelling
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:27 PM
In what way?
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
@Kylindra I think @BusyBeaver 's question was for you
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
I've experienced a mix when it comes to simming - younger me was big on action and grand combat narratives.
Older me is starting to really appreciate the moments of worldbuilding and exploration
1
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
So.. earlier sims in say, 2005 (yes, 2005) were far more action-heavy, more massive threats
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
@Kylindra what do you think it's more now?
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
In 2017+ they're more personal driven, more localized threats and driven by character beats (or attempted anyway)
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
interesting
maybe because simmers are mostly older?
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
quietly puts the omnipresent romulan invasion threats back in their box from his sim in its corner.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
this is just from 118. Fanfiction wise, well.. fandoms are unique beasts.
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:28 PM
@SilverNight I feel the same way re; worldbuilding exploration
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
Yeah, that's kinda what it feels like
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
haha @SilverNight you're a dinosaur!
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
Although there’s a fair few young member count in 118
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
I imagine, now that Picard's finiehed,we might see a trend in Trek writing back towards sweeping threats
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
I think for us too, there's an element of whatever Star Trek shows were actively airing informing a measure of tone too.
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:29 PM
I'm only 33, I thrive on the idea of pouncing on newer generations and vampyring them for new ideas.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:30 PM
Yes, I think the new shows have definitely changed things for role play
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:30 PM
I think technology, personalities and new generations have all changed the landscape. The concept is still the same, but the methods and mediums aren’t.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:30 PM
Uusally when I'm explainign those, I admit I point to "Look at Enterprise vs Discovery"
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:30 PM
We started in 1991, so there has been a lot of shifts in what people are experiencing in the world around them and what is being reflected in the stories we tell
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:30 PM
they do not feel the same at all
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:30 PM
The biggest challenge is communicating the vision so that everyone shares it.
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:30 PM
I’m 19. I much prefer storied which have meaning and are driven by world building rather than FIRE ON THAT SHIP THEYRE BAD
Let’s me explore my characters more
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:31 PM
Nuance is a lovely thing
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:32 PM
But admittedly, the thing is, sims are also driven by players
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:32 PM
@[22] greenfelt22 the thing I love about 118 is that everyone can influence the missions direction. Sure it has a beginning and an end goal in sight but how you get there is the best thing
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:32 PM
I was on a ship once that could only do combat
Because players lost interest if you added any other elements
and I wonder, if that's an issue with roleplaying, where people want something immediate to hook into, and may not appreciate that some text based sims can take years to reach a major arc point
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:33 PM
@Zech ♿ that’s certainly the case for the Black Hawk and most sims I play on.
Zech ♿18-Apr-20 02:34 PM
Awesome
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:34 PM
It’s no fun if you can’t contribute.
1
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:35 PM
yeah, I burnt out on 118 because of that
(before I rejoined)
and I think.. it's one of the problems that text based rp faces in remainign relevant. Keping it interesting for everyone
1
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:35 PM
I'd argue that's where you have a balance of larger missions and smaller side character things that keep you engaged and interested in your character(s) and and those around you
1
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:37 PM
This is hardly scientific, but I would break up simming history like this:
- Pre-1992: Primordial - loosely affiliated groups on early online services like AOL, Prodigy, and Compuserve
- 1992-1997: AOL Golden Era - begins with Kowalewski's founding of STF
- 1997-2001: AOL Imperial Era - begins with the founding of the Simming League and Bravo Fleet
- 2001-2007: Internet Imperial Era - Bravo Fleet and other Internet clubs overtake AOL as the dominent groups
- 2007-2011: Medieval Modern Era - begins with the dissolution of the Simming League; groups don't interact together as much
- 2011-current: Renaissance Modern Era - re-emergence of the greater community through cross-club events. (edited)
What do you think?
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:38 PM
Sounds about right
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:38 PM
mm. THat sounds fair
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:39 PM
Sure.
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:39 PM
I think that's an interesting break-up regarding time periods
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:39 PM
@[22] greenfelt22 you sound so enthusiastic!
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 02:39 PM
oh timelines!
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:39 PM
As an example (and I'm sorry for talking about this so much!), 118 was formed in '94 in the golden era
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:40 PM
it's amazing that we still have clubs alive today from back then
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:40 PM
Lol. I wasn’t involved in “mainstream” simming until 2012. Until then I’d basically been in the “independent” circuits.
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:40 PM
In 2000, it passed it's Constitution, and migrated to yahoo in that period (a lot of the history in that period is gone, sadly.)
(Like I spent a few weeks with internet archive and wasn't able to recover a lot)
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:40 PM
@Kylindra we've all lost of a lot of history unforunately
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 02:40 PM
20 minutes
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:40 PM
and then had a few major changes about 05'.
and a fairly interesting one about 08' when it lost a large portion of it's upper adminstration before reforming.
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:41 PM
@[IDF] Charles Star It's such a shame. Resources are very scarce.
1
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:41 PM
(and then the rise of the mediawiki and transfer to google groups would be considered the modern 118 fleet.)
It .. lines up surprisingly well.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:43 PM
Okay, we're finally going to get back to the topic at hand, how will the Simming Universe end? And why?
- Big Freeze?
- Big Crunch?
- Big Bounce?
- Steady State forever?
- Or something else entirely?
Go! What do you think? (edited)
Kylindra18-Apr-20 02:43 PM
I vote bounce. It'll just continue in some other form
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:43 PM
I think, personally, there will always be a need for story venues. Places where people interact.
[OF] B18-Apr-20 02:43 PM
I agree
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:43 PM
will it look the same as it does now? Maybe not.
But I don't think text will ever entirely disappear
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:44 PM
I think as long as we have popular series or any inspiration to draw from, in some way or shape, simming / online roleplay will survive
It'll continue to evolve and we'll see a new cast of characters; but the dedicated individuals who find themselves attracted to what we do will likely find a way to carry on
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:44 PM
It's about exploring possibilities
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:46 PM
Okay, changing things up a bit: most of you are Star Trek role players. How will Star Trek continue to play into the community compared to other genres?
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:46 PM
We've got an influx of new canon. That gives a lot more fodder
We haven't had that in so long
2
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:47 PM
The niche we have still seems to be popular. There's still a ton of ST based sims / groups around. I think as the series progresses, we'll see games remain. We might even experience an expansion if ST becomes culturally significant again.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:47 PM
What about when we're all 70, 80, 90, and dead? Will it still be Trek? (edited)
Iggy18-Apr-20 02:48 PM
(and by that I mean like really big and popular in the general public. ST seems to have it's core following, but I really wonder if it still is as important as it once was)
[22] greenfelt2218-Apr-20 02:48 PM
Simming will never die.
It’ll just evolve to assimilate new mediums.
1
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:49 PM
@[22] greenfelt22 what if everyone has their own holodeck by then? (edited)
SilverNight18-Apr-20 02:49 PM
Evolution/bounce - people have a need and desire to explore and see new media in which to build their settings.
SecondLife was huge for awhile because of how innovative you could be with set/building designs and introduce avatars with 'accepted' gear and could have live RolePlay going on.
VR may be the next step, may not.
Star Trek is just now getting the same bit that WH40K is - New Lore, New Cannon, New species and major lore shake ups and Side stories that are now semi-canon that you can take from being a vague idea and mold into your own setting.
USS Hawking that I run is exploring 'AI rights' and how much can you trust your own ship when an alien civilization 'Uplifts' a previously non-sentient computer and grants it by all definitions 'life'. (edited)
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:49 PM
cool @SilverNight
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:50 PM
Even if everyone has their own holodeck, we'll still want to explore stories.
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:50 PM
True!
BusyBeaver18-Apr-20 02:51 PM
As much as I like the idea of lying on a fake beach with my replicated margarita
1
[IDF] Charles Star18-Apr-20 02:52 PM
Apparently I'm on the schedule for the next panel here too, a trivia game. I better go get that ready now!
Thanks to everyone for the great discussion. Good points and ideas from all. I may need to run for a few minutes, but feel free to keep chatting away!

Iggy18-Apr-20 06:59 PM

Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 06:59 PM
greetings world; so this panel is about discussing how management of technology setup has changed over the years... So first question for people... How do people use technology in this time and what has changed in the years?
Iggy18-Apr-20 07:01 PM
Much of what I use currently seems to be the same in terms of hardware. I have a laptop, cell phone, and digital reading device (ipad). Software is greatly different, and that makes the experience overall difference.
Jack Pine18-Apr-20 07:02 PM
Smartphone and laptop
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:03 PM
So what sort of specific softwares do you use?
Iggy18-Apr-20 07:03 PM
Well...there's discord for starters (lol)
But most of it is connected software; software that fully integrates into end user experience.
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:04 PM
Ah well software for roleplay. These days discord. The group moved here. I miss teamspeak a bit. (edited)
Iggy18-Apr-20 07:04 PM
I use a unix OS (Mac) and most of what I have works seemlessly with it.
I weirdly miss AIM and irc rooms
Jack Pine18-Apr-20 07:05 PM
Xenoforum, JP pads, G doc
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:05 PM
so what is JP pads
Jack Pine18-Apr-20 07:06 PM
Publish.withme, and risepad.net
etherpads basically
you write on them in real time with other writers
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:06 PM
okay so its like google docs
Jack Pine18-Apr-20 07:06 PM
yeah
redCOMET18-Apr-20 07:06 PM

Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:07 PM
Aim, chatango, built in website chat rooms, various dull programs, roll 20, many many more. The forums have stayed throughout. (edited)
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:07 PM
So some of the other folks on this server mentioned nova... SO are most of the folks in here preferring forums and chat or do we have email posters and Nova users here?
With that question; why do people prefer their particular method of posting?
Iggy18-Apr-20 07:10 PM
I've always liked live games. Discord works great for that. Nova is interesting, but I'm not sure I have enough experience yet to say whether or not I like any better than other mediums
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:11 PM
I used to only do forums but now I prefer Discord; sometimes forum is good though.
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:13 PM
Sorry, was driving
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:14 PM
Familiarity is a factor. I like to use what I know works and gives me the time think before I write but if the roleplay group wants to change the tech then I try to go with them.
Discord is working for now due to it's open nature and popularity but if new software comes along and people move on and if's worse then I'm just gonna grumble and carry on.
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:14 PM
Back when I started, we were on AOL. Had private and public chats for roleplay anbd recruitment, and you were super lucky if AOL would give you a message boards
1
Websites weren't really a thing yet
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:15 PM
Discord is very good for instang messaging writing and the different servers helps too.
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:15 PM
at least, not for the average person
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:15 PM
early 1990s?
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:15 PM
Yup
Tech has come so far since then
I've run groups on Second Life. Commanded a starship in VR.
I wish we had this tech back then.
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:16 PM
hence the point of this discussion; how groups and people do their own setups is different
and its you know much different than it used to be
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:16 PM
Yeah
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:16 PM
I figure people can learn from each others methods of running or doing what they do
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:18 PM
Definitely
I took a long enough break from text-based simming that I had to relearn
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:20 PM
Is there a tech you wished existed for roleplays that doesn't? Like if discord made a discord just for roleplay or a slack that was built for roleplay only. What a world we'd be in. (Cue someone telling me it already exists).
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:21 PM
Hum.. Interesting question... Thoughts everyone?
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:22 PM
I'd love for VR to be more accessible
I loved my time RPing in Second Life, but the Trek scene's kind of died off there. Being able to RP in a virtual environment would be the next great step.
But, someone would need to build it, and not be shut down by CBS while doing it
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:24 PM
Ah yes, the more accessible the technology becomes, the more people that can get into roleplaying.
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:25 PM
It really depends on what you get out of RP, though
A lot of people wouldn't really want fully immerseive roleplay. They're into the collaborative writing and world building, which is definitely valid.
For me, it's about escapism.
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:25 PM
yeah I feel odd rping in games
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:26 PM
I've always loved Trek roleplay (I'm pretty Trek-centric) because I want to live in that world
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:29 PM
Star Trek is a hell of a uptopia dream. And I find I do better with writing software then talking in roleplay or through a simulation or an rpg.
I've got friends who ran a roleplay just through speaking through xbox live voice chat a decade ago and then there are the folks who only do pen and paper and the ones who who use apps for their stats and others that write in a live chat system. (edited)
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:30 PM
I guess VR Roleplay seems more accessible to me because I've done LARP
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:30 PM
Tech has changed because people find ways to roleplay and sometimes use the old ways still. (edited)
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:30 PM
It's a bit awkward at first
But, you get the hang of it
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:31 PM
Yea some people find LARP a bit daunting but vr would be a good first step. Maybe... (edited)
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:32 PM
Do any thigns exist that people think are niche that might be useful tools for other people who role play?
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:37 PM
I can't really think of anything
Unless Second Life or VRChat are considered niche
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:39 PM
I feel like there are so many tools now. Now that roleplaying is becoming mainstream, it's like an arms race.
[IDF] Ken Gillis18-Apr-20 07:40 PM
I mostly just use Nova. I've thought about building something more tailored for our use case, but Nova fills 90% of everything and since it's built in Code Igniter, modifying it is easy
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:40 PM
We've got 20 minutes left so I wanted to open this up for question is anyone have tech questions.
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:42 PM
I guess it also depends on the person. I get by with discord or any other instant messagjng program, a forum, some dice and a word doc. Whereas a friend of mine has his eloborate built sets and painted creatures from wargames. It's to each their own. (edited)
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:44 PM
Okies; so since there seems to be no open questions; anyone have anything else to say before I wrap up?
Rockyeahh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:46 PM
I can't remember what I was going to write...
Josh [TNU]18-Apr-20 07:46 PM

Alrighty well then I'm going to wrap this up here. See you at the closing ceremony.
